Summary: Dawn's Sorting doesn't go as her friends expected.
Word Count: 695
Author's Note: Not what I originally started for today, but the other one turned long and I was running out of time.

By the time it was actually her turn to wear the Sorting Hat, Dawn was more or less completely at ease. The train ride to Hogwarts had been long enough to not only get to know Ginny, Hermione, and their friends, but also for the girls to give her the student’s eye view of the houses.

Ginny reckoned Dawn was a dead certainty for Gryffindor, and confidently predicted they’d be sharing a dorm.

“It will be good, because I heard Emily isn’t coming back, her family sent her to Salem last year and she liked it so much she wants to finish there.”

“I don’t know, Ginny, you can’t be sure until the Sorting Hat weighs in,” Hermione had said cautiously. “I think she’s still a possibility for Ravenclaw. But you know, if it’s between two houses, the Hat will take your preference into account.”

So when she walked past the few first years whose names came farther down the alphabet than Summers, Dawn was fairly confident she could expect to end up at a table with either Ginny or Luna to welcome her.

So much for expectations.

For a start, the Hat had taken its sweet time rummaging around in her head.

“Hm. Very interesting. Not often I get to deal with an older one! Much more to work with. Bravery, daring, courage under fire, no doubt your friends are right to expect you in Gryffindor. A fine mind as well, the Ravenclaws would so love to have someone with a flair for languages and a creative bent for spellwork. Fierce loyalty, the Hufflepuffs would appreciate that, and if you chose them, they would be proud to have someone who thought that hard work and patience weren’t to be passed over in favor of showier things. But I think there’s a place where you would be well served, and possibly do a bit of good- that is, if you have the courage to take it. The other houses may talk of manipulation and sneaking, but there’s still need for guile and strategy, and with your experience, you have it in you to help the students left in that house find a better path…”

Dawn tried not to glare, as unlike the first years, she was big enough that her face showed under the brim of the Hat.

“You’re saying you want to stick me in Slytherin?” she demanded mentally.

“The founder of that House did prize ambition and resourcefulness,” the Hat replied diplomatically.
“And they desperately need some right now- look at them.”

Dawn looked, and noticed that the green and silver table was the most sparsely populated. Not only had fewer of the older students returned, there was only a pair of first years at the table, despite the majority of them already having been sorted. Clearly every first year had been repeating Harry’s mantra ‘not Slytherin! Not Slytherin!’

“Besides,” the Hat continued, “I think you’ll find you share a sense of humor with many of them.”

“Do I get something for my trouble?” Dawn hissed.

“It isn’t only Hufflepuffs who are loyal, you know,” the Hat remarked.

“Just to be clear on this, you do know my sister’s the Slayer, right?”

Dawn had the distinct impression that if an inanimate object could smirk, this one would.

“Threats like that just prove my point. You belong in SLYTHERIN!” the Hat bellowed the last word for the whole hall to hear.

Dawn nearly giggled at the sight of not just three but four completely baffled tables as she rose, primly placed the Hat back on its stool, and sauntered over to join her new housemates. Hermione and Ginny looked completely gobsmacked, and Ron appeared to be having some sort of mental breakdown, but Luna looked as serene as ever at the Ravenclaw table and gave her a cheerful wave.

A chorus of murmurs sprang up on all sides as she headed to the section of the Slytherin table she judged were the sixth years, and plopped herself down in the space they’d hastily freed up for her.

“Hi!” she said brightly.

The three amused smirks that greeted her made her think that perhaps the Hat was onto something.

The thought of Dawn in Slytherin is actually terrifying because of how well suited she is for their particular specialty. Lordy, Hogwarts won't know what hit it. :)

Exactly- that's what makes it so much fun. :)

Day Five - Accepted!

Dawn will be the first Slytherin to be friends with people in other houses. ;)

That's one of the reasons the Sorting Hat thought she should be there. :)
